    Laser pyrometry

    Get PDF
A method of determining the emissivity of a hot target from a laser-based reflectance measurement which is conducted simultaneously with a measurement of the target radiance is described. Once the correct radiance and emissivity are determined, one calculates the true target temperature from these parameters via the Planck equations. The design and performance of a laser pyrometer is described. The accuracy of laser pyrometry and the effect of ambient radiance are addressed

    The finite Bruck Loops

We continue the work by Aschbacher, Kinyon and Phillips [AKP] as well as of Glauberman [Glaub1,2] by describing the structure of the finite Bruck loops. We show essentially that a finite Bruck loop XX is the direct product of a Bruck loop of odd order with either a soluble Bruck loop of 2-power order or a product of loops related to the groups PSL2(q)PSL_2(q), q=9q= 9 or q≥5q \geq 5 a Fermat prime. The latter possibillity does occur as is shown in [Nag1, BS]. As corollaries we obtain versions of Sylow's, Lagrange's and Hall's Theorems for loops.Comment: 15 page

Games of status and discriminatory contracts

Following recent empirical evidence which indicates the importance of rank for the determination of workers' wellbeing, this paper introduces status seeking preferences in the form of rank-dependent utility functions into a moral hazard framework with one firm and multiple workers, but no correlation in production. We show that workers' concern for the rank of their wage in the firm's wage distribution induces the firm to offer discriminatory wage contracts when its aim is to induce all workers to expend effort

On Bruck Loops of 2-power Exponent

The goal of this paper is two-fold. First we provide the information needed to study Bol, ArA_r or Bruck loops by applying group theoretic methods. This information is used in this paper as well as in [BS3] and in [S]. Moreover, we determine the groups associated to Bruck loops of 2-power exponent under the assumption that every nonabelian simple group SS is either passive or isomorphic to \PSL_2(q), q−1≥4q-1 \ge 4 a 22-power. In a separate paper it is proven that indeed every nonabelian simple group SS is either passive or isomorphic to \PSL_2(q), q−1≥4q-1 \ge 4 a 22-power [S]. The results obtained here are used in [BS3], where we determine the structure of the groups associated to the finite Bruck loops.Comment: 26 page

    The states 1^1\Sigma^+_u, 1^1\Pi_u and 2^1\Sigma^+_u of Sr_2 studied by Fourier-transform spectroscopy

A high resolution study of the electronic states 1^1\Sigma^+_u and 1^1\Pi_u which belong to the asymptote 4^1D + 5^1S and of the state 2(A)^1\Sigma^+_u, which correlates to the asymptote 5^1P + 5^1S, is performed by Fourier-transform spectroscopy of fluorescence progressions induced by single frequency laser excitation. Precise descriptions of the potentials up to 2000 cm^{-1} above the bottom are derived and compared to currently available ab initio calculations. Especially for the state 1^1\Sigma^+_u large deviations are found. Rather weak and local perturbations are observed for the states 1^1\Pi_u and 2^1\Sigma^+_u, while a strong coupling of the state 1^1\Sigma^+_u to the component \Omega=0^+_u of the state 1^3\Pi_u, which belongs to the asymptote 5^3P + 5^1S, is indicated.Comment: Typing errors corrected (including numbers in table IX), 12 pages, 9 figure

    Nodular Sarcoidosis Masquerading as Cancer.

    Get PDF
Nodular lung disease is a rare pulmonary manifestation of sarcoidosis and resembles metastatic neoplasm disease. Nodular sarcoidosis is rare, varying from 1.6% to 4% of patients with sarcoidosis. Radiographic nodules measure from 1 to 5 cm in diameter that typically consist of coalescent granulomas. There is limited data on this form of sarcoidosis and its presentation can mimic primary or metastatic pulmonary neoplasms. Nodular sarcoidosis has a favorable prognosis, and resolution can be seen with oral corticosteroids. Herein, we present such a case of nodular pulmonary sarcoidosis with a lung nodule measured up to 6 cm
